Debunk the Fear of Writing
When my novel was released, the feedback I received most (besides congratulations) was, “I’ve always wanted to write a book.” For some people, writing isn’t a big deal; whether it’s an essay, a presentation, or a creative writing project. But for others, writing is a chore, and the fear of writing can stop some people from trying. Here are a few tips to debunk your fear of writing.
1. Outline
Please don’t try to start writing without an outline. That’s like driving somewhere you’ve never been without getting the address-you will never make it. What are you writing about? Pick a topic and sub-topics to support. An outline gives you a roadmap for your thoughts and will keep you on track.
2. Start Writing
Get on your computer and write! I will tell you now, you probably won't like what you wrote, but keep writing. Trust me. If your thoughts aren’t coming, then talk about your topic and write down what you’ve said. No matter how you decide to start, be sure to get something on paper on a regular basis.
3. Take a Break
Step back from your writing for a day and re-read it. You might read it and think you are ready for a Pulitzer, but if you are like me, you will probably hate it. Re-reading your work helps you further develop your ideas to where you want it to be.
4. Re-Write
Don’t be afraid to re-structure some sentences or use the thesaurus to change a word or two to enhance your writing. If you don’t like it, you can always go back and change it. Once you re-read and made your changes, step back from it again and re-read. You can repeat this process over and over until you are happy with your finished product.
So, now you are ready to start writing! Let me know how it works for you.
