Black History Month

The events of this past year have been historic for Black Americans. The United States elected the first Black Vice-President who attended a historically Black college, and Georgia sent its first Black Senator to the Capital.

Good stuff.

February is Black History Month. It is the one month we celebrate the incredible accomplishments of Black Americans during the year. There are varying ways to support Black History Month, but I'll provide you with a few.

  • Support Black-owned businesses

    • An estimated 40 percent of Black business owners had already closed their doors between February and April 2020. Becoming a customer is a great way to celebrate the month. Find companies by searching the #blackowned hashtag online.

  • Purchase, share and read books by Black authors.

    • Add Black authors to your reading list. Share their stories, or better yet, suggest a book to your book club.

    • Also, when you purchase books, try to buy them from local Black book stores. If they don't carry the book you are looking for, they can order it. Don’t be afraid to ask your local book store or library to highlight Black authors during February.

  • Attend Virtual Black History Month Celebrations

    • If you don’t know where to start looking for virtual events, check your city or state government websites for local listings for Black History month events such as online poetry-thons, scavenger hunts, art exhibits, performances, and more.
